KHYBER: The customs staff seized a huge quantity of urea fertiliser from a goods container at the Torkham border the other day.

Officials said that the customs staff searched the container after receiving information that the owner of the vehicle tried to deceive them with forged documents of rice export to Afghanistan.

They said that the customs officials found 780 bags of urea fertiliser, weighing 39 tonnes inside the container, which the owner wanted to take to Afghanistan.

They said that it was for the first time that they had foiled the attempt of smuggling such a huge quantity of urea to Afghanistan as Pakistan had long imposed a strict ban on its export.

Officials said that owner of the consignment, Ajmal Khan and driver of the vehicle, Anwar Sadat, both Afghan nationals, were taken into custody and a case was registered against them under Export/Import Control Act, 1959.

Customs officials said that the vehicle was earlier cleared at the National Logistics Cell in Jamrud after electronic scanning.
