Torture and abuse followed the Turpin siblings into the Riverside County foster care system after they were rescued from their parents’ “house of horrors” in 2018, according to a pair of lawsuits filed this week.
While in foster care, the 13 siblings were sexually abused over the course of three years, forced to gorge on food and eat their own vomit, court records show. Their foster parents suggested how the children could kill themselves and said no one would love them, according to complaints filed Tuesday in Riverside County Superior Court.

Iran’s state TV says the country’s foreign ministry recalled its ambassador from Sweden after an Iranian citizen was sentenced to life by a Swedish court for committing war crimes and murder during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s. The report Thursday quoted ministry spokesman Naser Kanani as saying the ambassador took the action for some “consultation” over the life sentence for Hamid Noury earlier this month. The Stockholm District Court said that Noury took part in severe atrocities in July and August 1988 while working as an assistant to the deputy prosecutor at the Gohardasht prison outside the Iranian city of Karaj.
Activists have opened a campaign in the Philippines to prevent a repeat of the abuses and plunder of the martial-law era that began 50 years ago under the father of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Pro-Marcos propaganda has portrayed the late president’s reign as a “golden era.” But the activists said they would fight efforts to gloss over the abuses committed under the elder Marcos’ dictatorship. He imposed martial law in September 1972 and was ousted in a 1986 uprising. His family's astonishing political comeback culminated with Marcos Jr. taking office as president last month. He has steadfastly refused to acknowledge and apologize for the abuses under his father’s rule.
A tornado blew through 11 villages in a farming region of eastern China, damaging homes, killing at least one person and injuring 25 others. The homes and property of more than 2,000 people were damaged when the twister struck Wednesday in a province south of Beijing. Media reported the estimated cost of damage was more than $9.6 million. Tornadoes are relatively rare in China, though its worst in recent decades killed 98 people in 2016. China has seen record high temperatures and unusually heavy rainfall this year. Climate change is considered a factor in both the warmer temperatures and heavier rainfall, as well as more frequent extreme weather.
Wireless and fixed-network equipment maker Nokia has reported second-quarter profit above analyst expectations on strong demand for 5G technology from phone operators and improved competitiveness of its main business units. The Espoo, Finland-based company reported net profit of 585 million euros ($597 million) on Thursday for the April-June period compared with 539 million euros a year earlier. The Buchenwald concentration camp memorial says that seven trees dedicated to the memory of victims of the Nazi camp in eastern Germany have been chopped down. The foundation that runs the memorial tweeted on Wednesday that the trees near the site apparently were attacked the previous day. It posted pictures showing the trees severed about halfway up the trunk and said it was “appalled at the deliberate attack on remembrance.” The foundation said that it had filed a complaint to police. One of the trees was dedicated to children killed at Buchenwald and the others to six prisoners at the camp.

The small numbers of U.S.-made multiple rocket launchers have given Ukraine a long-sought capability to strike Russian targets from a safe distance with precision. And supplies of Western heavy artillery systems, armored vehicles and other weapons have been essential to replenish Kyiv's equipment losses.
Asian shares have mostly fallen on persistent concerns about inflation and the Chinese economy, despite an overnight rally on Wall Street. Eyes were on the Bank of Japan, which wrapped up a two-day policy meeting, without any major policy changes, as was widely expected. The central bank has not indicated it will follow suit with others around the world, including the U.S. Federal Reserve, in raising interest rates to curb inflation. Deflation has been a persistent problem for Japan, which has suffered years of stagnation. A mid-week rally driven by strong corporate earnings appeared to be losing steam, laden by worries over energy supplies in Europe and slowing growth in China.
Japan has reported its trade deficit for the first half of this year totaled nearly 8 trillion yen, or about $58 billion, because of surging oil prices and a weakening yen. The deficit for January- June was the second consecutive half-year of deficits. Finance Ministry data released Thursday showed imports shrank nearly 38% in the first half of the year while exports grew 15%. In June, imports surged 46% while exports rose 19%. Imports from the Middle East, source of a large share of Japan's oil and gas supplies, jumped 125%. The yen has been trading at about 138 yen to the dollar, down from about 110 yen a year ago.

Many refugees fear for their safety if forced to return to the war-shattered country. Some say they would rather attempt the perilous journey by sea to Europe than return home. California Gov. Gavin Newsom is demanding an explanation from UCLA officials about their move to the Big Ten Conference. Newsom attended Wednesday’s UC Board of Regents meeting in San Francisco. The closed-door meeting was the first since UCLA and Southern California announced on June 30 that the schools would be leaving the Pac-12 Conference for the Big Ten in 2024. USC is a private institution and not part of the UC system. Newsom — an ex officio member of the Board of Regents — is among others asking how the move will benefit all student-athletes, as well as how to mitigate the financial effects it will cause to UC Berkeley, California’s other public university in the Pac 12.

Veteran politician Ranil Wickremesinghe has been sworn in as Sri Lanka’s new president to take charge of a nation bitterly angry he was chosen amid an unprecedented economic crisis. Wickremesinghe took his oath at a ceremony Thursday in Parliament. The six-time prime minister was chosen by a secret ballot of lawmakers Wednesday to finish the term of the former president who was toppled by protests and fled the country. Wickremesinghe also has drawn protesters’ ire, and crowds last week set his personal residence on fire and occupied his office. The economic crisis has left Sri Lankans struggling with shortages of essentials, including medicine, fuel and food.

The operator of a major pipeline from Russia to Europe says natural gas has started flowing through a major pipeline from Russia to Europe after a 10-day shutdown for maintenance. But the gas flow was expected to fall well short of full capacity. The Nord Stream 1 pipeline to Germany had been closed since July 11 for annual maintenance work. Amid growing tensions over Russia’s war in Ukraine, German officials had feared that the pipeline — the country’s main source of Russian gas, which has accounted for around a third of Germany’s gas supplies — might not reopen at all. Operator Nord Stream AG said that gas was flowing again Thursday morning.

An outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in cattle is raising alarm in Indonesia and its neighbors. Indonesia is using vaccination, culling and animal monitoring to try and curb the spread, but it's already sickened hundreds of thousands of cattle. The virus easily spreads through contact and airborne transmission and can quickly infect entire herds. People don't get the disease but can spread it if their clothes, vehicles or other items are contaminated. Australia is free of the disease but is worried because Indonesia's outbreak has spread to Bali, a popular destination for Australian tourists. Australia is offering assistance and stepping up detection and prevention steps at its airports to keep the virus out.
The oldest-ever male giant panda in captivity has died at age 35 after his health deteriorated. An An lived most of his life at a Hong Kong theme park after he and a female panda were gifted to Hong Kong by China in 1999. Jia Jia died in 2016 at age 38, making her the oldest-ever female panda in captivity. Ocean Park mourned An An as a family member who built bonds with locals and tourists and said his cleverness and playfulness would be missed. He had been kept from sight of park visitors in recent weeks as his health worsened. An An was euthanized to prevent further suffering Thursday after veterinarians consulted with China's panda conservation center.

A former national security official in the Trump White House, Matthew Pottinger, and a former press aide, Sarah Matthews, will be the key witnesses at a prime-time hearing of the Jan. 6 committee. Both Pottinger and Matthews resigned from the White House the day that supporters of President Donald Trump attacked the U.S. Capitol. Along with the former assistant to Trump’s chief of staff, Cassidy Hutchinson, they are the only Trump White House insiders to testify publicly. The House committee hearing Thursday night is expected to focus on what Trump did — and did not do — as his supporters swarmed the Capitol.

It might be the final time this summer that lawmakers lay out evidence about the U.S. Capitol insurrection and President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat. Thursday’s night's hearing is expected to focus on what Trump was doing in the White House as the violence unfolded. Republican congressman and committee member Adam Kinzinger says he expects the hearing will “open people’s eyes in a big way.” This will be the panel’s second prime-time hearing. And it is Democrats' latest campaign-season response to worries that a conservative Supreme Court that’s erased federal abortion rights could go further.
