WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Jan. 6 committee will hold its final hearing of the summer the way the series began — vividly making the case that Donald Trump's lies about a stolen election fueled the grisly U.S. Capitol attack, which he did nothing to stop but instead “gleefully” watched on television at the White House.

Thursday's prime-time hearing will dive into the 187 minutes that Trump failed to act on Jan. 6, 2021, despite pleas for help from aides, allies and even his family. The panel intends to show how the defeated president's attempt to overturn Joe Biden's election victory has left the United States facing enduring questions about the resiliency of its democracy.

Europe’s spate of fierce wildfires is abating somewhat amid cooler temperatures but a fire in Slovenia on the border with Italy has kicked up strongly, forcing the evacuation of three villages. French firefighters were starting to get the upper hand Thursday over two major blazes while Spain tamed a fire that killed two people last weekend. No new fires were reported in Portugal. Spanish firefighters were tackling nine blazes with two of them said to be especially dangerous. Some of the 11,000 people evacuated in Spain began returning home and a major highway reopened. Temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) and a drought have worsened Spain’s wildfires this year.

Health officials are grappling with how people staffing the new national 988 crisis hotlines will contend with suspicion of the medical establishment in Black communities.  The U.S. Justice Department ordered Mississippi last year to revamp its mental health system after federal regulators found that mentally ill people were being improperly detained. That contributes to what some experts say is an underutilization of mental health services within communities of color. Some local leaders are guiding people to mental health treatment through the Black churches that are pillars of their communities.

Rising mortgage rates have combined with already high home prices to discourage would-be buyers. Mortgage applications have declined sharply. Sales of previously occupied homes have fallen for five straight months, during what is generally the busiest time of year in real estate. All signals point toward the Federal Reserve continuing to raise interest rates to combat inflation, promising little relief for potential buyers at least for the rest of the year.

The European Central Bank has raised interest rates for the first time in 11 years, joining the global march to combat soaring inflation with an unexpectedly large hike of half a percentage point. The decision at a meeting of the bank’s 25-member governing council Thursday comes as it faces a tricky path forward: whether the rush to make credit more expensive will tip Europe into recession at the price of fighting record inflation. The bank says the larger-than-expected hike was justified by an “updated assessment of inflation risks.”

The BBC has apologized to the former nanny to Princes William and Harry over “false and malicious” claims made against her as part of a journalist’s attempt to obtain an exclusive television interview with Princess Diana. Alexandra Pettifer, formerly known as Tiggy Legge-Bourke, appeared at London’s High Court Thursday for a public apology from the broadcaster over false claims that she had an affair with Prince Charles while working as his personal assistant in 1995. BBC director-general Tim Davie said the corporation has agreed to pay “substantial damages” to Pettifer. William and Harry have strongly criticized the BBC for its shortcomings after an investigation found that one of its journalists, Martin Bashir, used deceitful means to secure the explosive Diana interview in 1995.

The spokesperson for Russia’s Foreign Ministry says the United States has shown disrespect for Russian law by characterizing basketball star Brittney Griner’s jailing on drug charges as “wrongful detention.” Griner has been jailed since she was arrested in mid-February at a Moscow airport after vape canisters containing cannabis oil were found in her luggage. The Phoenix Mercury standout and two-time Olympic gold medalist acknowledged in court this month that she had the canisters, but said she had no intent to break the law. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Thursday that the legalization of cannabis for medical and recreational use in parts of the U.S. has no bearing on what happens in Russia.

The Philadelphia 76ers are taking the first steps toward building a privately-funded sports and entertainment arena. The team’s managing partners on Thursday announced the creation of a new development company to create its future home in the city’s Fashion District. They say 76 Place is anticipated to cost about $1.3 billion. Josh Harris and David Blitzer say in a news release they’re committed to creating “a privately-funded arena that strengthens ties within the local community through investments that prioritize equity, inclusivity and accessibility.” Groundbreaking is not expected for several years and the project is expected to be finished in time for the 2031-2032 NBA season. The Sixers currently play at Wells Fargo Center.

Authorities say the death toll from five weeks of monsoon rains and flash floods has jumped to 282 in Pakistan, as the latest downpours continued lashing the impoverished country. The country's National Disaster Management Authority said Thursday that rains since June 14 have damaged highways, 22 bridges and 5,600 houses and that some of those killed in rain-related incidents were women and children. Every year, many cities in Pakistan struggle with the annual monsoon deluge, drawing criticism about poor government planning. The season runs from July through September.

As the World Health Organization announces the next step in its rollout of the world’s first authorized malaria vaccine in three African countries, concerns about its value have come from an unlikely source: the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, arguably the vaccine’s biggest backer. WHO endorsed the vaccine last fall as a “historic” breakthrough in the fight against malaria, but the Gates Foundation says it will no longer financially support the shot. Some scientists say they’re mystified by that decision, warning it could leave millions of African children at risk of dying from malaria, as well as undermine future efforts to solve intractable problems in public health.
